About 6 years ago, I could not walk without pain and had finally decided to get an MRI. I went to a prominent LA Hospital to have the pictures looked at. The radiologist told me that I had degenerative disk disease and two herniated disks, and that I would have to manage my pain for the rest of my life, eventually looking to surgery. Manage my pain? Surgery? I couldn’t believe it. I had been fit my whole life, athletic. How could this happen to me? I proceeded to see just about every kind of healer one might find in Los Angeles (And that is every kind of healer!), but my condition was not improving. I was very scared.

One day a friend of mine suggested I see a Sikh man named Guru Prem. I thought to myself cynically, ‘Just what I need...A Guru! I can see the robes and the beard now.’ That very same night my wife, Kia, and I went out to dinner at Real Food Daily on La Cienega. There was a nice woman sitting by herself at the table next to us. We struck up a conversation and got on the subject of bad backs. She looked at me and said, “Well, if you have a bad back you really ought to go see this man named Guru Prem.” I may not know a lot, but I know enough to listen when these types of things occur. The next morning I called Guru Prem and said, “Guru Prem, apparently I am supposed to come see you.” He chuckled. “Well, we better get you in here then,” he said.

I have now been seeing Guru Prem regularly since then. I have taken no medication at all for my back and certainly have not had surgery. I am in no pain save for occasional tweaks I get when I ask too much of my body. My life has changed profoundly in this time and I have healed myself as the direct result of his guidance and inspiration. I had tremendous good fortune to find a “healer” who understood the body’s capacity to heal and who could teach me how to align myself to stack the healing odds in my favor. The single most important piece of advice I can extend is to surround yourself with people who are healthy, knowledgeable and who support your growth as a Human Being. And then of course, you must make yourself into one of these people for those others who you can support.

Poker, which is often televised on ESPN, the sports channel, is now filled with household names like “Brunson,” “Moneymaker” and Hellmuth! It has become totally acceptable for people to indulge themselves in the ‘sport’ for 15 hours straight. How did this happen? Perhaps the better question is why?

I have seen a lot of weirdness in 40 years, major national distractions - O.J., Monica Lewinsky, Janet Jackson’s boob - which have arisen at such a time that 6 or 12 months later, I would wish we all had been paying better attention to the truly important matters at hand. Now, when major national distractions arise, I seek the presence of mind to ask the question what are we being distracted from?

In one respect, Poker is the perfect compliment and distraction for much of what we have seen this past 8 years in the United States. The basic statement poker players make is, “I will sit in a dingy, awful place for as long as it takes to prove to you and myself that with these playing cards, which have no bearing on any reality outside of this room, I can dup you out of your money quicker and more consistently than you can dup me out of mine.” Apparently, the egoic drive to beat our fellow man into the ground reaches beyond the traditional battlefield. In any event, it has proven a good distraction for many very intelligent people and a few less fortunate ones. So, what have we missed lately?

In the 1990’s, with the advent of the electric car, we had one good answer to our dependence on oil, but we allowed the interests of a few wealthy people to move us, once again, in the wrong direction. We would soon go to war over oil and we remain there today 5 years later. Tens of thousands have been killed and hundreds of thousands have been wounded. By the time it is over the price tag on this war will reach a trillion dollars. Can you imagine how different the world would be if we could go back in time and raise a trillion dollars for the development of renewable energy infrastructure in the United States?

Taking stock of it all, we might look back and conclude that in the archetypal battle between good and evil, Evil has had a pretty good run recently. Not true! Like the composed poker player she is, Good sits across from Evil and feigns the slightest hint of nervousness, all the while knowing she has the best hand at the table. “Check,” she says, patiently waiting, doing nothing. “All in,” says Evil, salivating at the thought of taking this monster pot down. Good has lured Evil out into the open for all to see. And now, having seen it, the spectators, aghast and amazed that they themselves have remained in this place watching this time-suck of a game, awaken from their collective daze and begin to live again.

As a consumer, insisting on and buying an electric vehicle is the single most powerful thing I can think to do. As soon as one year from now, car companies will be coming out with affordable electric cars for the masses. There is a solution and we need to focus on it now. Go to pluginamerica.org and become familiar with the facts. We must do everything possible to turn the tide and put an end to this era of fighting for oil.

Dear Eco Express Krewe,

Happy Summer to you all. A piece of good news: Synchronicity is alive and well. We had been unable to obtain the dates that we wanted at The Santa Monica Civic for the 2nd annual Eco Gift and had taken to looking elsewhere. Our first year was a big success and we had high hopes of returning to The Civic in year two. After several months of searching, the right venue just did not present itself to us. I picked up the phone one last time to see if the Civic could possibly take us and, miraculously, they had just had a cancellation for the weekend we needed in December. It is with great excitement that we can announce to you all that the Second Annual 'Eco Gift' event will take place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on December 12, 13 and 14.

Please mark your calendars now. With a full line-up of music, speakers, outstanding gift shopping and Organic food, we cannot wait to see you and celebrate the holidays together.

All my best,

Not a single day has gone by in the last 18 months where I did not struggle to come up with new words to describe the global movement to address humanity's biggest concerns, which we find ourselves in the middle of right now. The main problem is that our industry ('Posse' might be a better word for us) has not been successful at setting widely accepted definitions and standards for what it actually means to be 'Green' or 'Eco' or 'Sustainable'. This has led to debate and controversy as governments, companies, organizations and individuals try to figure out what is what. Read more »

This has led to debate and controversy as governments, companies, organizations and individuals try to figure out what is what.

What criteria are there to determine how green a company is? What claims can they make? How can people who have decided to be as conscious as possible about their purchasing decisions know what to look for and trust what they are being told?

I started Eco Gift in 2007, and we spend the better part of each year deciding which companies belong at our sustainable gift show. We have our own internal debates, which can get fairly passionate. There are, as yet, so many grey areas, but I personally focus on three specific ones:

1. Answering To The Triple Bottom Line

It all begins with attitude. A company's mindset and culture are derived from the attitudes of its leaders. Actually, the extent to which a company's leaders can call themselves "leaders" is directly proportional to their ability to recognize, see and hear ALL stakeholders in a company. This includes employees, independent contractors, stockholders, vendors, customers and anyone else who comes into contact with the company or its products. Of course, we cannot exclude The Planet Earth from this list.

Several executives I have spoken with regard the "Green Movement" as one of the great marketing opportunities of our time. Here is a quote that generally expresses their attitude: "Hey let's get into this Green thing. Great for marketing. Great for our bottom line." One might feel negatively about such an attitude, but certainly we can understand it. These people are running companies and their directive is to have that company succeed. This "green thing" might help them to do so. The problem with this attitude is that it perpetuates a manner of doing business based solely on financial outcome. Their compass is set to "succeed financially by adding to the bottom line". This is old school thinking in that it does not take into account the principle of Triple Bottom Line, which adds environmental and social responsibilities to the obvious financial ones that a company must manage. In this brave new green world, a more conscious and authentic attitude takes into consideration the whole impact of a company's activities on people and the planet while at the same time creating profit. If you want to call yourself a green company, first check the attitude of your leaders or if you are the leader...Check yourself.

2. The 11 Basic, Yet Essential, Practices of a Green Company

Creation of A Common Mission - All employees should know the company's mission and environmental policy.

Philanthropy - Give a percentage of your company's profits to organizations doing work to make the world a better place.

Renewable Energy -Your company buys Green Power from its utility and replaces its lightbulbs with CFL bulbs .

Travel Less - Your company Skypes, Ichats and Emails whenever possible instead of flying and driving.

Buy Less - Your Company buys used goods whenever possible and only buys what it needs.

Cars - Your company encourages carpooling and rents hybrids when travel is necessary.

Food - Your company provides at least one Organic Vegetarian meal per week. This pays for itself in a dozen tangible ways.

Water - Give up bottled water for good! Your company provides clean filtered water and offers its employees non-plastic water bottles.

Recycling - Your company recycles all recyclable products.

Reusable Bags - No more paper and plastic! You company has canvas bags of varying sizes available to anyone shopping on behalf of the company.

Coffee Mugs - Your company provides mugs to decrease waste.

3. The 8 deadly Sins a Green Company will avoid

Harming People - If your products or their production are known to be harmful to people, maybe try producing something else or go out of business.

Harming The Planet - If your company is clearly harming the planet, then stop. If you cannot stop because your product is needed, then find a way to produce your product less harmfully. (Go here http://www.interfaceinc.com/who/founder.html for an incredible story about what is possible when leaders lead.)

Not Knowing Your Company - If you are not aware of your company's practices and products, you cannot gauge the effect you are having in the world. Green Companies are run by people who make it their business to know their business.

Lying About the Past - The truly Green Company will not cover up its past, but will own it, try to repair any damage and do better work now.

Hypocrisy at the top - Leaders must walk their company's talk or pay the price. Being a signpost is not enough. The leaders must live the solutions.

A Hummer for Everyone in the office - Giving wasteful gifts to employees is unhelpful and sends the wrong message.

How about a Burger? - 'Hamburgers for the office' is not a particularly green idea. Have your burger if you desire, but do so realizing the cost to the planet "America's love of burgers contributes approximately 941 to 1023 pounds of greenhouse gas per person, per year http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/12/the_carbon_foot_1.php

Chinese Take-Out? - The styrofoam packaging debacle continues in our country. If you order in food to the office, make sure to connect your favorite local restaurants with alternatives to styrofoam. Here are several: http://www.wheatware.com | http://worldcentric.org/

Whether you are the head of a company or an individual, most of all remember this: No one is perfect. It is the commitment to moving in the right direction that counts.
There is a global desire to standardize these terms to create a common understanding. For the time being however, there is a great amount of subjectivity in the language surrounding the shift we are experiencing at this time.

In the day to day operations of Eco Gift Expo, we are constantly being asked, “what does it mean to be ECO?” So we have set out to define the term and we do so realizing that there is, in fact, subjectivity. In other words, this is our opinion and we keep updating it. We welcome your contributions to this dialogue and look forward to hearing your thoughts on the topic.

ECO comes from the word ECOLOGY, which is defined in Wikipedia as “The scientific study of the distribution and abundance of life and the interactions between organisms and their environment. The word "ecology" is often used in common parlance as a reference to the natural environment or environmentalism.” ( HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecology" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecology)

Borrowing from this definition, we here at Eco Gift Expo define the term ECO as follows:

e-co adj. The state or quality of an individual or group of individuals whose lifestyle is guided by two main principles:
Leave less of a negative imprint on the Earth
Leave more of a positive imprint on people.
e.g. “That company is fully eco. They only import fair trade, organic products.”
“Barbara invests solely in clean tech businesses. She is so eco.

e-co adj. A product or service that adheres to the same principles laid out in section one here above. These products usually lead to long-term health and happiness and do so with little or no negative impact on the planet.

e.g. “Clothing made from Organic Cotton and Bamboo? Organic Chocolate?
All natural skin care? These are the best eco gifts I have ever seen.”
e-co adj. The type of lifestyle that includes health, happiness and the well-being of people and the planet as core themes.

e.g. “Apparently Michael bought an electric car to fit his eco lifestyle.”

The take-away for us from these definitions is the idea that being “eco” is a whole mindset, which includes but is not limited to sustainability. How we eat, how we treat other people, what we decide to spend our money on is all a reflection of our belief system and lifestyle. The Eco Gift Expo is a place where we can uplift each other during the holidays with great music, great food and great ECO ways to spend our money on gifts that will hold true to our definitions. As such, Eco Gift Expo is a microcosm of how we would like the world to be year round. It is our great hope to see you out there this December and in many places between now and then.
If one wants to create a successful business, one need only begin by seeking out a problem that needs solving. The bigger the problem and the more painful its manifestation, the more successful the company will be that solves it.

I have launched a new business venture known as Eco Gift Expo to address the inconveniences, difficult emotions and terrible waste associated with the holidays and holiday gift shopping. The proposition is simple - What if you could get all of your holiday shopping done on one day under one roof where everything you bought would add value to someone's life and was manufactured by companies that are part of the solution to our environmental and social challenges? What if the event had an eco gift-wrapping station? What if there was an organic food court, performers, wandering minstrels and an all-around festive atmosphere? What if a considerable amount of money was donated to charities - one global and one local?

Companies are excited to get in front of so many people who have come specifically to shop with eco-conscious companies like theirs. Gift shoppers are relieved and exalted to have a one-stop eco-shop solution to the holiday mayhem.

Eco Gift Expo will take place at The Santa Monica Civic Center on December 15th and 16th, 2007. We are expecting 150 Eco-Conscious companies and 15,000 holiday shoppers.

We have thus far struck very powerful marketing relationships and sold about 30 booths in under 2 weeks. Our website is up and folks are signing up for our newsletter, The Eco Express, the first edition of which goes out in September. We are about to run a major Eco-Give-A-Way contest to attract people to sign up for our newsletter and I will write soon about that.

In 2008 we will be expanding our concept to at least 5 markets with the intention of having an Eco Gift Expo in every major city that would support such an event. Throughout the rest of each year, we will be providing sales and marketing services to conscious companies.

I will write each week about the experiences - joys and challenges - that I am going through producing this event. If I can be of service to anyone who comes across this blog, please reach out to me and let me know what is up and how you are doing.

May your lives be filled with blessings each day,

I want to thank Julian and the participants of this Zymposium for inviting me to contribute a few words about Eco Business and Conscious Capitalism. I am wholly a student of the 4 folks who have written this week and thanks to their sharing I have learned quite a bit and am very grateful for that.

I am writing from San Diego where I am at The Social Venture Network Fall Conference. I just left the final Q&A of the evening with Priya Haji of World of Good and Chris Van Dyke of Nau. In the world of Eco-Commerce, these folks are serious heavyweights who are walking their talk by applying progressive ideas to business on a daily basis. Their passion is palpable. So inspiring!

These past 6 months I have put most of my energies into creating a new business called the Eco Gift Expo. The response we have had has been overwhelming. This is significant because it indicates that we are now living in a time where there is enough of a demand to warrant a large-scale holiday gift show for eco-conscious consumers. This also means that manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and other service providers are stepping up to supply this increasing demand for consciously produced goods. A great indication of a positive shift.

The 3 members of our sales team speak with about 20-30 eco-conscious companies daily to learn about them, tell them about us and see if they would make a good fit in our expo. One theme in particular keeps popping up. What is an eco gift and what are the criteria for entry? This has provoked some heated debate in our office and has caused me to examine my beliefs. Consider the following story…

“A woman calls me on the phone to get information about the Eco Gift Expo. She is super cool, positive. It feels good to speak with her and I am truly connecting with what she is saying. She is jazzed about our event, wants to have a booth there, but something is in the way. Her tone changes. “You know, I really want to be there, but I am just not ECO enough,” she says. I say, “Tell me about your company and where you are at.” It turns out that this woman is extremely conscious about sourcing the metals she uses to create her jewelry line, but whereas she is able to get recycled gold and silver, she is unable to purchase recycled base metals at this point in the development of the metal industry. She concludes that she cannot attend our expo because she cannot, in good faith, offer a fully eco product. Interesting! Her principal fear, of course, is that a small band of eco-warriors will find out about her “impurity” and attack her booth at the expo screaming, “Kill the heretic!”, just before burning her at the stake. This brings up some important questions that I am going to be responsible for answering. Why not put it right out there to the Zaadz community to get your opinions on the topic. Here is the main question: If you were producing an event called The Eco Gift Expo, and you had to set criteria for companies and the gifts they sell to be allowed in your event, what would your criteria be? For some, this might be easy to answer. I thought it was pretty straightforward until I started to hear stories like the one from this woman. She gives money to charity, she is an expert host covering environmental topics and she does everything she can to use recycled materials in her work. Should I exclude her company, which produces incredibly beautiful jewelry with positive messages inscribed on the stones, because she works in an industry where it is currently impossible for her to be 100% eco? Pondering this, I look down at my leather shoes pressing down the accelerator in my Subaru Outback and I frown at the realization - Lord have mercy, I am not 100% eco either. I start to think of my hardest core eco-friends. One guy simply does not ride in gas-powered vehicles. Won't even get in one. Pretty hard core I think. Then I remember he wears all kind of leather too and in that way he supports the cattle industry which is responsible for clear-cutting forests and turning them into grazing land, etc, etc. Eventually I come to the realization that no one is 100% Eco. So what standards am I trying to set with the Eco Gift Expo? Who is in? Who is out? Where is that fine line to be drawn? Perhaps I will be burned at the stake, but not without a good fight anyway…. Here goes: An eco-conscious company creates products and services that add true value to people's lives by promoting health, wellness and peace without compromising the wellness of the Earth in its production. Now that last part is really tricky.

I feel strongly about being inclusive. I want to support the companies that are moving in the right direction. They may not be 100% organic, but their products enhance our lives.

LuLuLemon is such a company. I love these guys because of their messaging and the fact that their products encourage yoga and athletics. They do have a growing organic line, but the fact is they are far from 100% organic. I support them, nonetheless, and think they are a great company. Yes, but are they an eco-company? Should they be in the show?

Another interesting situation has to do with one of our beneficiaries, Global Green USA. When we went to sign our agreement with them they made it clear that if we partnered with other companies that were contributing to the global warming problem (like ALL automobile companies that produce gas-powered cars) they would have to break with us immediately. I asked about Toyota as an example of a car company moving in the right direction. And they responded by telling me that Toyota, GM and 7 others were suing the State of California to block greenhouse gas regulation. What do I do with that? I am bummed to hear about this and, at the same time, I want to support the move toward better automotive technology, a virtue that Toyota has demonstrated. Nothing is black and white!

My teacher, Guru Prem, often reminds me that if one wants to change the world, one must only change oneself and the world is therefore automatically changed. In the final analysis, all change takes place at the level of the individual first and then can be seen as a shift at the level of the collective. If we are able to get people to change the way they shop, we will change the world indeed.

In Love and Gratitude,

Tommy Rosen

Tommy Rosen Speaks with Elevision

We were excited to sit down with Elephant Magazine founder, Waylon Lewis, and share the Eco Gift vision! We are so thrilled to be creating the first ever large-scale eco-conscious gift show that provides people with an uplifting experience and a solution to the inconveniences and terrible waste associated with the holidays and holiday shopping.
